Year 1000 After Crowning

March 28th

Arrived at Castallan Keep on March 28th 1000 AC. Part of the party that defeated a group of Kobolds by using their ambush against them.

Use of caltrops in the was a key decision in contributing to the defeat of the kobolds. A feat that amused the patrons of Castallan Keep’s only tavern that they covered her expenses for the week.

March 28th - 35th

Between March 28th 1000 AC and March 35th 1000 AC the tales of ambushing the kobolds has brought some attention to Mira. In addition to having a weeks worth of living expenses comp'ed for her role in the adventure, she finds that her lethal caltrops are a frequent curiosity. Where did she get them? How much did she pay for them? Can I inspect them?

When a stranger asks to purchase them Mira declines. A day later she finds them stolen and in their place are 20 gold pieces. And the stranger is never seen again.

Mira later fashions a necklace of small decorative caltrops as a reminder of her adventure.

April 28th - 35th

Between April 28th 1000 AC and April 35th 1000 AC the weather has warmed more people are congregating in the keep at least temporarily. The stockade of public shaming has been empty but one day Mira notices a man in the stockade with shoulder length hair a curly mustache, and wearing gloves on his hands.

He begs Mira to be merciful and release him. "No one is looking!" he says. He offers that his name is Conrad.

Instead of releasing him Mira goes off and deliberately gets in trouble to join him. Conrad talks the entire time and none of his stories are believable. One does stick out as more unusual than the others. When he talks about traveling to the deserts of Yllarum he expressed disappointment that the sand wasn't the color of the sky.

May 7th

On May 7th 1000 AC Adventuring Party 2 comes up with a plan to learn more about the possible whereabouts of Conrad, by using a similar technique that Olga Volgamoore and Beatrix Knibbs used with a trio of bandits a week ago. This time the plan is to stage a birthday party for Stilton (whose birthday was 2 weeks prior) at the tavern, and charge people admission to cover the costs of the food (meat pies prepared by Beef the Meaty).

Mira successfully invites the bandit known the party as 'Viking Braids' when she is splitting wood, and extends the invitation to her friends as well.

During the birthday celebration the party learns the names of the three bandits: Nyx Lastname (poofy hair), the muscular one with the viking braids is Shieldbasher, and the one with the 'short bob' is named Ellie (which Nyx pronounces "Ewws" which is Ells short for Eloquent Ellie).

Group isolates each of the three bandits so Beatrix can use his ESP spell on them again. Between that and general conversation, the party learns that the three bandits are leaving in the morning to meet up with their gang "the swans" who have a hideout south of the keep that are a couple days away, confirms that Conrad's hair is grows at a fast rate. Everyone in the keep knows Conrad and everyone has some sort of grievance with him. The gang doesn't pay taxes. There are two routes to the headquarters through the mountains or take the river south and then trek up through the hills going North.

The bandits invite the party to join the gang. But the party declines.

Other activities include hair braiding, arm wrestling contests with Shieldbasher, writing people's names on their foreheads with warpaint. As parting favor, Mira gives Shieldbasher a whistle which she intends to use to track the bandits to their hideout. Shieldbasher decides to play the whistle as they walk away from the party which irritates the two others who are carrying stacks of left over meat pies.

May 14th

On May 14th 1000 AC Olga Volgamoore and Mira visit Grwowth at his cave and bring him some of Beef's meat pies. After some initial pleasantries Olga says that they are looking for someone who is accused of doing "the bad kind of murder" and then goes onto describe Conrad. Grwowth relays that he knew Conrad as a gold polisher who showed up at his cave and offered to take the ogre's gold coins and return them fully polished (an obvious scam). He thinks Conrad is over due and should be returning with the gold pieces. Grwowth assumed Conrad was living in the keep.

Mira asked about Conrad's appearance, Grwowth says he had a uni-brow that would be the envy of any Ogre.

Grwowth is nervous about talking to "the law", no matter how good the meat pies are. Mira explains that they are mercenaries and this is just a job.

Grwowth asked whether there is a reward for tracking down Conrad and Mira says that there is and it's in meat pies. Grwowth thinks that is odd and even suspects that Conrad's accusers will turn him into meat pies. He says that he only takes gold for jobs and wishes them luck.

Olga plants the idea that Grwowth's missing gold was due to Conrad and not to a miscounting by Grwowth. Mira convinces Grwowth that it is at least a possibility while also telling Grwowth she lives in a cave like him. She was also interested in his furry bear coat.

After leaving the caves the two go hunting for bear, and find a carcass that had been picked over. They see a peryton, a human sized monster with the body of an eagle, the head and antlers of a stag, and the teeth of a wolf. The two decide to back away from the scene. When they are far enough away they see a second one descend from the tree tops, which would have surprised them if they had attacked the other.

May 14th - 28th

Between May 14th 1000 AC and May 28th 1000 AC Mira has the opportunity to investigate the victims of the peryton attack, Arznak the monster hunter, or the empty cages. She was particularly upset with the monster hunter because he messed with her friends. While investigating him she catches Arznak spying on Olga as she speaks to the priest of Macroblahn.

May 28th

On May 28th 1000 AC Mira approaches Arznak while he is oiling his monster traps. She attempts to sneak up on him and trigger the trap he is working on, but she draws attention to herself when she slips in some of the oil he's using. She complains and asks him to do this outside the keep. He refuses and tells her to stay away from his stuff. He goes on to lecture her about how dangerous his equipment is. She walks away after a few sentences of the lecture and Arznak continues the lecture without her presence. From a distance Mira still hears the monster hunter talking and she gives him the finger.

Party 2 decides to revisit the cages that were found on May 21st, and speculate on Arznak's motives as they assume the cages (and the scrap of paper with Belcadizasine script) are his. But mostly the party discusses the potential to make money off of the cages.

When they arrive Mira picks the lock and as a result she learns the nature and shape of the key and will have a good chance of identifying it later.

May 29th

Party 2 discover that Beef the Meaty has been abducted. The party searches his quarter where they see signs of a struggle. The Amulet of protection is nowhere to be found. Stilton Hovel finds trace evidence that the three bandits he spoke to yesterday were in the room. The party inquires about the trio and learn that they did not make any arrangements to stay overnight yesterday.

They proceed to converse with the Scribe of Castallan Keep who doesn't have it in his records that he left. In conversation, Conrad comes up and the Scribe shows some patience to him that no one else seems to have.

In secret the Scribe suspects that there are unknown ways to get in and out of the keep, which has caused him to alter records and if caught could be big trouble for him.

May 30th

Party 2 revisit the Scribe of Castallan Keep. Beatrix asks if he was ready for a curve ball, which confused him because all balls are curved.

Olga Volgamoore presses the scribe about secret passages into and out of Castallan Keep and the scribe repeats that he doesn't know. If he did he would do his best to seal them up as their existence implicates (at best) less than accurate record keeping.

Beatrix inquires if there would be a pretax reward for locating the hypothetical passages. The scribe indicates that there is a possibility.

The party heads off in the direction of The Swans base of operations, which they only have a rough idea of its whereabouts. They know of a long way which requires traveling south by the river and then back north, and the shorter way through the mountains. The party elects for the shorter route to try to beat the abductors to the base.

Mira is able to decode secret path markers used by the bandits.

May 31st

The party comes out of the mountains and enters a terrain of rolling grasslands with no roads or buildings. The party eventually arrives at a mansion in the middle of nowhere. There are people in the courtyard. A whistle could be heard and someone yelling to get them to stop.

The party moves on further south in order to intercept the abductors and free Beef before the bandits reach the camp. After putting a fair amount of distance between the camp and themselves, the party hides. Right before midnight the group is able to spot the bandits riding in a cart pulled by a donkey or a small horse which also has Beef who is bound.

May 32nd

Mira takes cover behind a hill and waits for the wagon to pass so she can perform a surprise attack on the abductors from behind while they deal with the rest of Party 2 up ahead. She will wait for the party members to say "Curve Ball" before attacking.

Mira witnesses Olga Volgamoore and Beatrix Knibbs succumb to a sleep spell cast by Jilly Lank. She then sees Stilton Hovel move the two out of the road so the cart does not trample them. As Stilton is moving them, Mira sees Jilly cast Invisibility on Nyx Lastname.

Mira watches Stilton as he moves Olga and Beatrix to safety and then wake them after the wagon has passed. In quick succession Mira witnesses Beatrix casting sleep on Ellie and Jilly, Olga shouting the signal to attack, and the appearance of a fourth abductor (Tankard Safecracker) in the still moving wagon.

Mira holds her attack and tries unsuccessfully to track down the now invisible Nyx without leaving her vantage point.

After Mira looks back at the scene after giving up on locating Nyx, she finds Olga running beside the cart, Stilton inside the cart with Beef, Tankard attempting to get a hold of the reigns with an arrow sticking out of his shoulder and Beatrix stabbing Jilly to death.

Mira notches an arrow an yells for Beef to get down as looses the arrow which also finds its way to Tankard's body. Mira runs down and slays Ellie in her unconscious state. When she looks up she hears the group ask:

What should we do with Ellie... Oh nevermind.

With their attack now concluded, Mira loots Ellie's corpse while the group discusses how to proceed with two of the bandits dead, one surrendered and another one that is nowhere to be seen. The most notable item she finds on Ellie's body is a journal.

After the rescuers let Tankard go they turn the cart south and ask Beef to explain what happened to him. He explains some of the details of the abduction and shares a bit of what he learned from the bandits.

• There is a mansion with a treasure room protected by magic traps.
• The mansion has a garden that has the highly sought after purple habaneros, which would be great for his meat pies.
• Finally there is a wizard Uzul Balashi who is a very powerful druid who can control plants.

He also shares that Jilly tried to read his mind in order to gain his recipe for meat pies, but Beef doesn't think of it as a recipe. Instead he views it as something that is constantly being perfected, each time he prepares one, he does it differently.

The group eventually abandons the cart so they can hide in the hills, away from the road. Mira covers the group's tracks from their pursuers which helps at first, but then diminishes over time due to their exhaustion. Some clever work by Beatrix sends their pursuers in a different direction and the party is able to successfully evade them.

May 33rd

Adventuring Party 9 travels back in the direction of Castallan Keep. While traveling Eloquent Ellie's Journal and Jilly Lank's Journal are read.

From Jilly's notes they learn that she was recently recruited into The Swans specifically for her mind reading capabilities. This was because The Swans had encountered an elf at the keep which they suspect was reading the minds of their members and they wanted to match that capability. The abduction of of Beef the Meaty was her first mission. She did not get along with Eloquent Ellie and was actively plotting ways to murder her.

From Ellie's journal was detailed about planning missions and they learn the name Phrynia who is influential with the leader of the swans. Phrynia's wanted more meat pies after tasting the ones that Ellie, Shieldbasher, and Nyx Lastname returned to camp with after attending a birthday party during their time at the keep. So the leader, Dominguos de Bellehache, ordered Beef's abduction.

There are coded notes which Mira is able to determine are the early stages of a plan to frame Jilly for some act of betrayal of the swans. This was driven because Ellie was incapable of trusting anyone who could read minds.

May 34th

Adventuring Party 9 arrives back at the keep after rescuing Beef the Meaty and evading pursuit from The Swans.
